ANDi → Fusion — conversational design system

Overview

Owning a system in transition.

I took design ownership of ANDi, a virtual assistant, during a team transition and inherited a complex ecosystem of Figma files, legacy components, conversational flows, and evolving design-system standards.

My role went beyond designing individual experiences. I helped organize, maintain, modernize, and scale the Figma system behind them, while supporting the evolution of ANDi and Legacy Search into Fusion, the unified search experience spanning desktop and mobile web, and iOS and Android apps.

The Challenge

Years of work, multiple files, one direction.

ANDi had years of existing work spread across multiple Figma files, component libraries, and Lucidchart architecture.

At the same time, the broader Flagship design system was evolving alongside the development of a new component library.

I needed to quickly understand what existed, maintain active work, and help move designs forward without introducing more inconsistency or unnecessary duplication.

What I Did

Six areas of focus.

01

Organized complex Figma ecosystems

Navigated extensive legacy files and libraries, cleaned up and organized working files, and created clearer structures for ongoing design work.

02

Maintained and evolved component libraries

Updated legacy ANDi components, created reusable patterns where needed, and leveraged existing components instead of repeatedly creating one-off UI.

03

Modernized legacy designs

Recreated legacy Lucidchart artifacts in Figma, translated outdated patterns into modern Flagship design-system components and proposed new components where existing patterns didn't meet the needs of the experience.

04

Designed for reuse

Looked beyond individual screens to identify recurring conversational patterns, states, and behaviors that could be standardized across flows.

05

Connected architecture to UI

Translated complex conversational architecture from Lucidchart into structured, customer-facing Figma experiences.

06

Built complete flows and prototypes

Created end-to-end experiences and high-fidelity prototypes using consistent components and patterns so stakeholders could review the experience as a system rather than a collection of screens.

Design-System Evolution

Navigating multiple generations.

A major part of the work involved navigating multiple generations of design patterns. Rather than treating migration as a visual reskin, I focused on preserving useful interaction patterns while reducing unnecessary variation and aligning new work with the evolving design system.

Designing at Scale

Multiple flows, one system.

The component system supported conversational experiences across multiple customer needs. Working across multiple flows made consistency especially important, components needed to behave predictably while supporting different content, customer states, and conversational paths.

MOVING TO FUSION

From search to AI-assisted experience.

Fusion brought together Legacy Search and conversational assistance into an AI-enhanced experience spanning web, mobile web, and iOS & Android apps.

As the experience evolved, I helped bridge legacy ANDi & ANDi 2.0 patterns with newer Flagship components, maintaining continuity while moving the system toward its next generation.

Impact

What changed.

Created order from complexity

Quickly learned and navigated a large legacy Figma ecosystem while maintaining active delivery.

Increased consistency

Used reusable components and established patterns across multiple conversational experiences.

Reduced legacy design debt

Recreated outdated artifacts and transitioned existing designs toward current design-system standards.

Designed for scale

Considered components, states, patterns, and reuse, not just individual screens.

Improved collaboration

Created organized flows and prototypes that made complex experiences easier for designers, product partners, developers, and stakeholders to understand.

Supported system evolution

Helped bridge an established virtual assistant and its legacy components into the newer AI-enhanced ANDi 2.0 ecosystem.

Prototyping With the System

Fast, faithful prototypes from reusable parts.

I used the component system to create multiple high-fidelity conversational prototypes under tight deadlines. Because the underlying patterns were reusable, I could rapidly assemble complete experiences while maintaining visual and interaction consistency.

The prototypes helped teams identify gaps, understand behavior, align on design intent, and make decisions faster.

This work was recognized with a Connection Award for contributions to ANDi + Fusion designs and high-fidelity prototypes.
